Estyn Inspection report

Parents should have received a letter today (Wednesday 26th July) relating to the outcome of the school’s recent Estyn Inspection. As a school we are surprised and very disappointed with the judgements made by Estyn on our latest school inspection. We’ve received many positive reports from outside agencies, supporting the positive improvements we’ve made over the last three years and our strong exam results in 2016.

Despite this, we’re already working alongside the local authority and the local consortia to examine carefully the issues raised in the report and to identify the best ways to ensure the school can address the recommendations.

In responding to the inspection report’s publication, our Cabinet Member for Education and Achievement Cllr Philippa Marsden has said:

“We’ve obviously very disappointed with this news, but we’re already working hard to move Bedwas High School forward. While significant progress has been made at the school since its last inspection in 2013, we acknowledge that inspectors felt that progress wasn’t swift enough. We are already working alongside the school to address the recommendations highlighted in the report, and everyone involved is absolutely committed to providing the best possible education for our students. With the ongoing support of the school community including governors and staff, as well as the council, Education Achievement Service and of course parents, we will continue to address Estyn’s recommendations for the school and work to further improve standards”.

I would wholeheartedly echo Cllr Marsden’s comments; while we must acknowledge that there are evidently some further improvements to be made, we should not lose sight of the fact that our school has come a long way since its last inspection in 2013. The school will be holding a series of consultations for parents and guardians in early September, which will allow an opportunity to share any concerns and to support the school as we move forward. In the meantime, if any parents or guardians would wish to discuss their concerns with a representative from Caerphilly County Borough Council, they are able to do so by calling 01443 866603.

Please rest assured that everyone at Bedwas High School continues to be 100% committed to providing the best possible standard of education for our pupils. I’m confident that with the continued support of the Bedwas community, we will do everything possible to build on our progress made to date.

Best wishes,
